The rarest of rare treasure, this ivory sofa is the only one of its kind in the world.
Lala Fakir Chandji started the work on this unique sofa in 1870 when he engaged the master craftsman Abdul Wajid in this work. Later on even Abdul Wajid's
son joined in to create this masterpiece. This unique piece of craftsmanship took 50 long
years of uninterrupted and painstaking efforts of two generations of artisans to complete.
On account of his magnificent creation, Shepherds Bush awarded Abdul Wajid a
commemorative diploma during the coronation exhibition in London in 1911.
The set comprises of one sofa, two chairs, one table and man height screen carved with
peacocks, elephants and filigree work. In this edge to edge carving work even the nails,
screws and hinges were carved out in ivory. |
