Well-carved
Sandalwood screens are in themselves rare but what do you call an 8 feet by 8 feet
masterwork, carved as Work on Work. What this means is that the screen is carved from both
the sides while carving is usually done from only one side. Such carvings, as well as the
craftsmen, who can do such fine work, are almost rare to find. The whole process of
creation is not only extremely complicated but also very demanding - often involving years
of painstaking efforts. The design in itself is very fine and delicate, with minute
patterns criss-crossing the entire length and breadth of the screen. |
